Question 1

What is the UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)?

Accepted Answer

The UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is a digital travel document designed for citizens of eligible countries who wish to visit the United Kingdom for tourism, business, or transit purposes. Unlike traditional visas, the ETA is entirely digital and linked to your passport electronically, meaning no physical stamp or document is required. The ETA allows multiple visits to the UK within its validity period, making it an ideal solution for frequent travelers who need quick and hassle-free entry to the country.

Question 2

Who is eligible to apply for a UK ETA?

Accepted Answer

Citizens of eligible countries and territories can apply for a UK ETA. This includes nationals from North America, Europe, Asia, South America, Africa, and Oceania. However, individuals with valid UK visas, permission to live or work in the UK, or those holding British or Irish passports are exempt from obtaining an ETA. If you're unsure about your country's eligibility, you can check our eligibility checker tool on the homepage, which provides instant confirmation based on your nationality.

Question 3

How do I apply for a UK ETA?

Accepted Answer

Applying for a UK ETA is straightforward and entirely online. Simply visit our application portal, fill out the electronic form with your personal details and passport information, upload your documents, review your information for accuracy, and submit your application. The entire process typically takes only 10-15 minutes. You'll need a valid passport and a way to receive communications. Once you submit your application, our system processes it automatically, and you'll receive your decision via email once processing is complete.

Question 4

How long does UK ETA processing take?

Accepted Answer

Express Processing takes 12-36 hours and Regular Processing takes 3 working days. We recommend applying well in advance of your travel date—ideally 1-2 weeks before your departure—to avoid any last-minute complications. You will receive your decision by email.

Question 5

What documents do I need to apply for a UK ETA?

Accepted Answer

You'll need the valid passport you will travel with; the ETA is linked to it and lasts until it expires or for 2 years, whichever is sooner. Your passport must be in good condition. You'll also upload a photo of your passport's photo page and a photo of your face, and give basic personal, contact and employment details and a criminal history declaration. You'll also need an email address to receive your ETA confirmation and any updates regarding your application. Unlike traditional visas, you won't need to provide birth certificates, employment letters, or bank statements.

Question 6

Is the UK ETA application process secure?

Accepted Answer

Payments are handled by Stripe, and information sent between your browser and our website is encrypted. We use your personal data only to process your application and provide support. See our Privacy Policy for details of how your data is handled.

Question 7

What is the validity period of the UK ETA?

Accepted Answer

The UK ETA is valid for two years from the date of issuance or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. During this two-year period, you can make multiple visits to the UK, with each visit allowing you to stay for up to six months. An ETA cannot be renewed. When it expires, you'll need to apply for a new one before traveling to the UK again. Keep in mind that the ETA is linked to your passport, so if you get a new passport you will need a new ETA.

Question 8

How many visits can I make with a single UK ETA?

Accepted Answer

Your UK ETA allows unlimited visits to the United Kingdom during its two-year validity period. Each visit can last for up to six months, depending on the purpose of your trip. However, border officials may ask about the purpose and duration of your visit each time you enter the UK. If you're planning frequent short-term visits for business or tourism, the ETA is the most convenient option. Note that you cannot use your ETA for extended stays—if you plan to stay longer than six months or work in the UK, you'll need to apply for an appropriate visa.

Question 9

Can I use my UK ETA for work purposes?

Accepted Answer

The UK ETA is primarily designed for tourism, business visits, short-term study, and transit. An ETA does not let you take up employment in the UK. Business visitors can attend meetings, conferences, and networking events, and some limited paid activities, such as permitted paid engagements, are allowed under the visitor rules. Creative workers with a Creative Worker certificate of sponsorship may be able to work for up to three months under the creative worker concession. For long-term employment, self-employment, or settling in the UK, you'll need to apply for an appropriate UK work visa.

Question 10

What if my application is rejected?

Accepted Answer

If your UK ETA application is refused, you can apply again, but the fee for the earlier application is not refunded. An ETA can be refused in some circumstances, such as certain criminal convictions, previous breaches of UK immigration rules, or false information in an application. In some cases a Standard Visitor visa may be a better route.

Question 11

Can I edit my application after submitting it?

Accepted Answer

Unfortunately, once you submit your UK ETA application, you cannot make changes to the information you provided. This is why we strongly recommend carefully reviewing all details before final submission, including your name spelling and passport number. If you discover an error after submission, contact our customer support team immediately. Depending on the nature of the error and the stage of processing, we may be able to cancel your application and help you reapply with correct information.

Question 12

Can I cancel or get a refund on my UK ETA?

Accepted Answer

Fees are non-refundable once payment is processed. This applies even if your application is rejected, you decide to cancel, or you simply change your travel plans. Limited exceptions are described in our Refund Policy. If you've already received your approved ETA and need to cancel your trip, no refund can be issued. We recommend purchasing travel insurance to protect against unexpected changes.

Question 13

Will I need a printed visa or stamp for the UK?

Accepted Answer

No, you will not need a printed visa or any physical document. The UK ETA is entirely digital and is electronically linked to your passport. When you arrive at UK immigration, border officials will verify your ETA in the system by scanning your passport. There are no stamps, stickers, or additional documents required. This digital approach makes travel faster and simpler, and you can travel knowing your authorization is securely stored and accessible to immigration officials worldwide.

Question 14

What purposes of travel are covered by the UK ETA?

Accepted Answer

The UK ETA covers a wide range of travel purposes including tourism and leisure activities, business visits and conferences, short-term study programs (up to six months), creative work engagements (up to three months), visiting family and friends, medical treatment and consultations, and transit through the UK to another destination. Each purpose may have specific conditions or restrictions. If you're unsure whether your intended activities are covered by the ETA, our eligibility checker or customer support team can provide guidance to ensure you have the correct travel document.

Question 15

Do family members need separate ETA applications?

Accepted Answer

Yes, each family member, including children and infants, needs their own ETA. Our application form lets you add several travelers to one group application, with each traveler's details and fee included. If you're traveling as a family, we recommend applying together so all members receive their approvals around the same time.

Question 16

As an EU citizen, do I need a UK ETA to visit the UK?

Accepted Answer

Yes, EU citizens do require a UK ETA to visit the United Kingdom. Since the UK departed from the European Union, all EU nationals traveling to the UK for tourism, business, or short-term visits must obtain an ETA just like other eligible non-British nationals. The requirement came into effect on April 2, 2025, and applies to EU member states other than Ireland, whose citizens do not need an ETA. Citizens of EU countries can easily apply through our platform. If you have a valid UK visa or settlement status, you may be exempt from the ETA requirement.

Question 17

What are the costs involved in getting a UK ETA?

Accepted Answer

The UK ETA application fees are $60 for regular processing and $90 for express processing. These fees cover the complete application process including review and approval. The price shown at checkout is the price you pay for each traveler. The fee is payable online during the application process via credit card or debit card.

Question 18

How far in advance should I apply for a UK ETA?

Accepted Answer

We recommend applying for your UK ETA at least 1-2 weeks before your intended departure date. Applying in advance gives you peace of mind and ensures there's time to address any potential issues if additional verification is needed. If you're traveling soon or have an urgent need, you can still apply and choose Express Processing (12-36 hours). Never leave your application until the last day before your trip to avoid potential delays or complications.
